Owning a cat in Singapore can be an incredibly rewarding experience—these affectionate, low maintenance companions thrive in small spaces and bring endless joy to their humans. Research has shown that the effects of petting a cat for around 10 minutes can reduce stress.
Personally, I have experience it 1st hand. Sesame was a stray male cat that my wife and I adopted from a rescuer. He is always in unexpected places ready to give us the warmest welcome when we are back home and hearing him purr also get us to a relax state.

As a first time owner, I was clueless on what we needed to do but the rescuer was very helpful and provided a lot of information and assurance that we will going to be good fur parents. From my personal experience, I will split it into 2 different stages pre-ownership and lesson learned from pet ownership.
Pre-ownership:
Sesame was adopted thus we reimburse cost which the rescuer has incurred such as sterilization and vaccinations. We got him registered aka microchipped which is free current with the schedule shown in the as part of the Animal & Veterinary Services.
After that we also fenced up our windows with window mesh to prevent him from being too curious of what is outside of the windows. Like every new pet owners, we also got the essentials such as cat litter, litter box, carrier, water bowls, bedding, and toys.
But I must inform you that all the bedding and toys are not required to be expensive as they can be as simple as the used box which the litters came from. Sesame seems to enjoy them more than all the beddings or toys that we got him.

Lessons learned from pet cat ownership
- Priorities cat Health in the our warm country-Cats dehydrate quickly in Singapore’s humidity so we adopt a free feeding method so sesame is able to eat and drink as much as he wants.
- Like humans, pet cats will need to go for annual vet checks to catch issues early and dental care to prevent any costly problems later.
- Having scratching poles or mats as it will save your furniture.
- Cats’ quirky behaviors such as zooming around the house, batting at invisible prey, or squeezing into boxes always bring laughter to us.
- Observing a cat’s grace, from their sleek movements to their serene nap Is therapeutic to me and sometime it also amaze me on how they position themselves to sleep.
A cat isn’t just a pet; it’s family. Plan wisely, and enjoy the companionship!
